## Engineering knowledge base: commissioning and troubleshooting

### [EtherCAT servo systems: commissioning and troubleshooting](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/ethercat)

EtherCAT is a real-time Ethernet fieldbus that processes the frame on the fly at every node, and it is the standard choice for machines with many tightly synchronised axes. The answers below collect what is asked most in the field, from the ESI file and Distributed Clocks to a slave stuck in PRE-OP and working-counter errors.

### [CANopen networks: installation, CiA 402 and debugging](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/canopen)

CANopen runs the CiA 301 communication profile over a CAN bus, with the CiA 402 device profile for drives. It is robust and widely understood at moderate axis counts; most problems in the field come from termination, bit rate and the axis state machine.

### [Modbus RTU: RS-485 wiring, addressing and timeouts](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/modbus)

Modbus RTU is a simple, register-based poll-and-answer protocol over RS-485. It is ideal for reading and writing parameters and for simple commands; it was not designed for synchronised motion.

### [Pulse/direction servo control: electronic gear, wiring and lost pulses](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/pulse-direction)

In pulse/direction control every pulse tells the drive to move one position step and the direction signal tells it which way. It is a simple interface that works with every PLC and motion card, and with the right electronic gear ratio and noise-proof wiring it is precise and reliable.

### [Analog ±10 V speed and torque control: scaling, offset and noise](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/analog-control)

In analog control the upper controller gives the drive a speed or torque reference in the ±10 V range. It is still common in machine retrofits and in systems where an external controller closes the position loop; it succeeds or fails on scaling, zero offset and a clean ground.

### [PLC and motion control with CODESYS: EtherCAT, SoftMotion and tasks](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/codesys)

CODESYS is a PLC programming environment for the IEC 61131-3 languages, and it brings the EtherCAT master, SoftMotion axes and visualisation together in one project. The MAT-LC CPU family and the HMI-R9 panels are CODESYS-based.

### [PLC selection, IEC 61131-3 languages and I/O wiring](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/plc)

The right PLC is chosen from the I/O count, the axis count, the cycle time and the communication it must carry. Most problems in the field, though, come from basics: PNP/NPN mismatches, retained data and scan-time overruns.

- [Which PLC should I choose for my machine?](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/plc#q-plc-sizing)

### [HMI and Panel PC: selection, PLC connection and screen design](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/hmi)

The operator panel is the face of the machine: the right touch technology, the right connection and a readable screen design directly reduce downtime and operator error.

### [Commissioning a servo system: checklist, auto-tuning and homing](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/servo-commissioning)

Running a servo axis for the first time is a matter of sequence: wiring checks, motor and encoder match, direction and limits, then tuning and homing. A skipped step comes back later as vibration and position error.

### [Servo drive alarms: overcurrent, overvoltage, encoder and following error](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/troubleshooting)

A drive alarm is a consequence, not a cause. The answers below give the most common alarms with the physical reason behind them and the order in which to check. For the alarm code itself, always use the drive's own manual.

### [Servo cables, shielding, grounding and EMC](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/cables-emc)

A large share of unexplained faults in servo systems come from cabling and grounding. The right cable type, a 360° shield connection and separating power from signal prevent most noise problems before they start.

### [Ball screw, belt, rack and gearbox: matching the mechanics to the servo](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/machine-mechanics)

A servo motor is only as good as the mechanics it drives. The transmission type, the reduction ratio, the inertia match and the coupling decide both the motor size and the dynamics you can reach.

### [Servo system architecture: voltage level, network, braking and safety](https://smb-hkt.com/en/faq/system-design)

A motion system is a handful of architecture decisions before it is a parts list: which voltage level, which network, where the regenerated energy goes, how the machine stops safely. These are the decisions that are most expensive to change later.

## Frequently asked questions

### Catalogue and prices

- **Why are there no prices in the catalogue?** This catalogue does not publish prices. Most of these products are configured to the application, and the right figure depends on the drive, motor and cable set chosen and on the quantity. You add the products you are interested in to a quote list instead, and send them in one go.
- **How do I ask for a quotation?** Collect as many products as you need with the "Add to Basket" button on each product page, then send the list from the contact form. The list fills the form in for you; you do not have to type the product codes.

### Choosing a product

- **Which drive and motor suit my application?** The selection guide lets you filter products by power, supply, feedback and communication. If you are not sure which of those belong together, the engineering guides walk through the same decision step by step.
- **Where do I start when choosing a CNC lathe?** The diameter and length of the part, and the bar capacity, are the first three measurements that decide the model. The turning sizer narrows the series down from those inputs.

### Documents and files

- **Where do I download manuals, datasheets and software?** From the document centre; each product page also lists the documents belonging to that product. When you are after one product's document, its own page is the shortest route.
- **Do you publish EtherCAT ESI and CANopen EDS files?** Our EtherCAT ESI files are published in the document centre and on the relevant product page. If the file for your product is not listed, write to us and we will send the version we hold. The Vendor ID under which we are registered for EtherCAT and CANopen is 0x00000B14; that is the identity we appear under in network configuration tools.

### Becoming a dealer

- **How do I become a dealer?** You send your application from the dealer application page. Once it has been reviewed, the dealer channel is opened on your account.
- **What does a dealer account give me?** A dealer account shows the catalogue at your own dealer prices, and lets you prepare and send order requests and follow your quotations, orders and invoices from one place.

### Account and personal data

- **Why do I need an account to send a request?** Requests come from a confirmed e-mail address, so that the reply can actually reach you and so the form cannot be used to send fake enquiries. Signing up happens once and collects the company and phone details the technical team needs in order to come back to you.
- **How is my personal data handled?** The KVKK disclosure text states which data is processed for which purpose, and what your rights are. You can ask for your data to be erased from your own account page.
- **Can I read the site in English?** Yes. The language button in the header switches the page between Turkish and English, and keeps you on the page you were reading.
