One set, controller to cable
Controller, drive, motor, cable and connector arrive checked against each other; interface problems are solved at the desk, not on the shop floor.
A gantry that stays in sync at cutting speed, for fast, clean cuts.
On CNC routers and woodworking machines, long gantry axes run at high feed and are driven in sync from both ends.
If the two X motors are not driven in the same cycle, the gantry racks.
Rack and pinion and the gearbox ratio set speed and inertia together.
Drag-chain cables and good grounding prevent random faults.

How the machine is driven and the SMB products we choose for it.
CNC routers and woodworking machines cut at high feed rates on long gantry axes. Driving the motors at both ends of the gantry in sync, as one axis, directly decides surface quality and the life of the gantry.
In furniture, door and panel production the machine earns its keep with a gantry that stays in sync at cutting speed and a fast tool change.
A gantry router is a CNC controller, a servo drive per axis driven over EtherCAT (SDU3 on the gantry, SD24-LP on the small axes), and SM08 to SM13 flange motors chosen by the axis load. The catalogue's Panel PC CNC controller bundles a CODESYS-based multi-axis CNC controller with a 12" panel PC and EtherCAT I/O; on smaller machines a MAT-LC CPU with an HMI-R9 panel does the same job.
We need the gantry mass, the stroke, the top feed and acceleration, the transmission type and the reduction ratio. The sizer takes the mechanics and the selection guide filters drives by supply and fieldbus.

The industrial switch distributes Ethernet traffic between the controller, the operator panel and the engineering PC. It is part of the architecture, not part of the SMB catalogue.
SMB controllers are programmed in CODESYS: the IEC 61131-3 languages, integrated motion and a single project covering both machine logic and the axes.
PLCopen Motion Control function blocks give every axis the same standard interface, so proven machine code carries over from one project to the next.
SMB servo drives implement the CiA 402 drive profile: the same state machine and the same operating modes over EtherCAT and over CANopen.

The motion profile, load and cycle time of every axis are collected; torque, speed and inertia ratio are calculated per axis.
The network (EtherCAT, CANopen, Modbus RTU), the controller and the drive–motor pair per axis are chosen; the safety and power side is drawn at this step.
Power and encoder cables run in separate ducts with their shields bonded 360°; an EMI filter goes at the drive input and a braking resistor where the load regenerates.
In the CODESYS project the axes are defined with PLCopen blocks; the drives join the network through their ESI/EDS files and run the CiA 402 state machine.
After wiring and direction checks the gains are tuned and the axes homed; the operator panel carries the machine recipes.
