The sector at a glance

Machine Tools

CNC and machining centres need high-bandwidth servo control to follow the commanded tool path accurately.

Three things that decide it on the shop floor

  1. 01

    Contour accuracy

The axes must be commanded in the same cycle; a sync error leaves a mark on the surface.

  2. 02

    Rigidity under cutting load

Motor, drive tuning and mechanics are chosen as one decision.

  3. 03

    Resonance

Long ball screws and couplings can be excited by the speed-loop gain; a notch filter is needed.

How we build the system

From control chain to commissioning, which product goes where

3.1

The control chain and the recommended products

How the machine is driven and the SMB products we choose for it.

CNC and machining centres rely on synchronized multi-axis servo control for accurate tool-path following: coordinated interpolation across axes, high-bandwidth position loops and rigid holding torque keep contours accurate at cutting speed. Feedback resolution and drive tuning directly determine surface finish and repeatability.

Metalworking is in the roots of A GROUP, the industrial group SMB TECHNICS belongs to. That shop-floor experience becomes an engineering-led approach to motion that keeps machine-tool axes synchronized at cutting speed.

The control chain

A machining centre is a coordination problem before it is a power problem. The controller interpolates the path, the drives hold each axis on it, and the feedback decides how closely. On our side that chain is a MAT-LC CodeSys CPU with its I/O modules, a servo drive per axis — SDU3 and the SDE families for the mid range, EUD where a spindle needs the power — and SM06 to SM13 flange motors chosen by the frame the machine was designed around. The operator meets it through an HMI-R9 panel, or a QT teach pendant where the work is set up at the machine.

What decides the result

  • Feedback resolution. The catalogue publishes encoders from 13-bit incremental to 17-bit BiSS single-turn and 23-bit BiSS-C. On a contour, resolution is the floor under your surface finish: the drive cannot correct an error it cannot see.
  • Bus determinism, not bus speed. Axes have to be commanded on the same tick. Our drives publish EtherCAT and CANopen (CiA 301 / CiA 402) options; which one you need is set by the controller you already run, not by a datasheet number.
  • Holding torque and rigidity. Cutting load pushes the axis off the path and the loop pushes back. Motor frame and drive tuning are one decision, which is why the two are selected together below.

Sizing it

To size an axis we need the moving mass or reflected inertia, the stroke and the cycle you want to hold, the feed and rapid speeds, and the duty. The selection guide filters the drive range by power, supply, feedback and fieldbus; the sizer takes the mechanics. If the machine is a lathe, the turning sizer works from the cut instead.

Ethernet switch

The industrial switch distributes Ethernet traffic between the controller, the operator panel and the engineering PC. It is part of the architecture, not part of the SMB catalogue.

CODESYS

SMB controllers are programmed in CODESYS: the IEC 61131-3 languages, integrated motion and a single project covering both machine logic and the axes.

PLCopen

PLCopen Motion Control function blocks give every axis the same standard interface, so proven machine code carries over from one project to the next.

CiA 402

SMB servo drives implement the CiA 402 drive profile: the same state machine and the same operating modes over EtherCAT and over CANopen.

3.4

The build, step by step

From requirement to support; the SMB products and tools each step uses.

  1. 1

    Requirements and sizing

The motion profile, load and cycle time of every axis are collected; torque, speed and inertia ratio are calculated per axis.

    • Peak and RMS torque, top speed
    • Load-to-motor inertia ratio and gearing
    • Supply: 220 V AC, 380 V AC or 24–70 V DC
  2. 2

    Architecture and product choice

The network (EtherCAT, CANopen, Modbus RTU), the controller and the drive–motor pair per axis are chosen; the safety and power side is drawn at this step.

    • EtherCAT for synchronised axes, CANopen for independent ones
    • Drive current covers the motor peak current
    • STO and braked motors come from the risk assessment
  3. 3

    Cabinet, cabling and EMC

Power and encoder cables run in separate ducts with their shields bonded 360°; an EMI filter goes at the drive input and a braking resistor where the load regenerates.

    • Flexible cable for the cable chain
    • Shields are earthed at both ends
    • The braking resistor is sized from the braking energy
  4. 4

    Software and network

In the CODESYS project the axes are defined with PLCopen blocks; the drives join the network through their ESI/EDS files and run the CiA 402 state machine.

    • IEC 61131-3 languages and PLCopen Motion Control
    • ESI (EtherCAT) and EDS (CANopen) in the Document Centre
    • EtherCAT coupler for remote I/O
  5. 5

    Commissioning and tuning

After wiring and direction checks the gains are tuned and the axes homed; the operator panel carries the machine recipes.

    • Direction, limit and emergency-stop tests
    • Speed and position loop gain tuning
    • Backing up the parameter sets

Alarm codes, spare parts, firmware and training, from the same engineering team.
